How To Easy And Fast Create Massive Google Adwords Ad Groups

by Frank Rui Jiang on December 2, 2009

Are you still creating Google Adwords campaigns and ad groups by manually typing in Google Adwords API? If you have less than 20 ad groups then you will be fine, but what about 200? even 2000 ad groups? This post entry is for those new PPC managers who are struggling with creating massive Google Adwords Campaigns (let’s say 500 ad groups each), but please bear in mind, it is Not any sort of fancy new technique to magically create 500 Ad groups from uploading excel spreadsheet within 2 minutes. Although I would love to see Google to come up with any new functionality to make my life easier, but apparently they cannot just let me finish my job within 5 minutes.

See how fast that man is typing in the picture? You better to be faster than him. In order to get massive ad groups created faster and easier, we need following tools

  • Microsoft Office Excel
  • Google Adwords Editor
  • A bottle of Redbull (it’s boring work, make sure you don’t fall asleep)

Step 1 – Get your Ad Groups and keywords ready in excel

Assuming you’ve prepared all the keywords, ad copies, tracking urls, etc, then you are good to go. Excel is a good friend, especially when you have loads of data to input. Put all the stuff in excel spreadsheet first, including ad group names, urls, max bid prices, etc. It will make your life much easier in the future.

Step 2 – Create Ad Groups in Adwords Editor

Create a new excel spreadsheet, follow the instruction to write the headers, the order of header does not matter. If you want to assign ad groups to different campaigns, make sure to tick “My ad group information below includes a column for campaign names”.

Step 3 – Place in Ad Group names

Place in the ad groups data first, along with Max CPCs. This has to be done before you input the data of ad copies and keywords. (I guess the theory is water can only be put in a bottle if the bottle is existing)

Step 4 – Add these Ad Groups and check if any problem occurs

This step is quite handy because you can find out if there is anything goes wrong. For example, as shown in figure below, I had implemented a duplicated adgroups and now I know. I didn’t place any figure in placements columns because this campaign is based on search network.

Step 5 – Add multiple text ads

I am pretty sure you won’t only have just one ad for each ad group, in order to reduce the pain to manually type in, re-arrange the data in excel following the instruction. Don’t forget to tick “My text ad information below includes columns for campaign and ad grou names”.

Step 6 – Chuck keywords in

You are nearly finishing the work! The last step is to chuck all the keywords in, the quantity of keywords can be over thousands or even tens of thousands. You don’t have to open every single ad group and put keywords in, just place them in excel in right order and then copy and paste to Adwords Editor, it’s done! Of course don’t forget to tick the option.

It will save you a lot of time creating Google Adwords ad groups in this way, although I would say it’s still time consuming. I sincerely hope Google can upgrade Adwords Editor so that all the ads can be created by uploading one excel spreadsheet.

I just had few big projects to create ads for, the number of ad groups exceeds 300, so I decided to write this post entry. If you have better method in terms of time saving, please let me know, I would really appreciate your help.

Adwords is really good for promoting a product that you want to sell online. It is very important that you geoatarget your intended audience so as to avoid wasting your advertising funds.

Adwords is a really great tool for promoting your website, forum or affiliate link. the ppc cost of adwords is even cheaper than Friendster or Facebook. before, i used to advertise on facebook but the ROI is so low. Adwords gives me a much better ROI compared to Facebook ads.

I just set up an adwords campaign but only with 10 ad groups. If it’s works, I’ll probably set up much more
ad groups.
This article will be very useful. Thanks
